Oil palm waste-derived adsorbents for the sequestration of selected polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbon in contaminated aqueous medium

Carbonaceous adsorbents were synthesized from palm kernel shell and palm mesocarp fiber for the adsorption of phenanthrene (PHE) and the highly carcinogenic-benzo(a)pyrene (BaP). The structure and properties of the activated biochar were characterized using standardized analytical tools. The microscopic examinations carried out with SEM and BET results revealed mesoporous structures and interstitial spaces in the activated samples (AB-PKS and AB-PMS). Powder X-ray diffraction (PXRD) results showed that prepared sorbents are amorphous and that activation affected the amorphous cellulose on the surface of the microfibrils which led to a decrease in the intensity of some peaks. Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR) affirms the availability of surface moieties that may promote polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbon (PAH) removal or decontamination of aqueous media. The sorption isotherm and effect of pH on the adsorption of PHE and BaP onto the activated palm kernel shell (AB-PKS) and activated palm mesocarp fiber (AB-PMF) were investigated. The isotherm studies and error analysis (SSE and R2) confirm that the Freundlich model best fits experimental results for AB-PMF; while, the Langmuir model best describes AB-PKS sorption of BaP and PHE, respectively. The optimal removal efficiency for PHE was between 84 and 100% while that of BaP was between 68 and 87% with maximum adsorption capacity (qmax) of 19.38–21.98 mg/g and 1.24–13.26 mg/g, respectively. The optimum pH condition for removing PHE is less than 7 and above 7 for BaP. Therefore, the conversion of waste materials to useful sorbents, as well as preliminary adsorption test results obtained suggests a cleaner and cost-effective pathway for waste management and water treatment.

A systematic review on enhancement strategies in biochar-based remediation of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons

Polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) are pervasive ecological pollutants produced essentially during the inadequate burning of organic materials. PAHs are a group of different organic compounds that are made out of various aromatic rings. PAHs pose a serious risk to humans and aquatic ecosystems because of their mutagenic and carcinogenic properties. In this way, there is a critical prerequisite to utilizing successful remediation strategies and methods to limit the dangerous effect of these pollutants on the ecosystem. Biochar has believed of intriguing properties such as simple manufacturing operations and more affordable and more productive materials. Biochar is a sustainable carbonaceous material that has an enormous surface area with bountiful functional groups and pore structure, which has huge potential for the remediation of toxic pollutants. This review emphasizes the occurrence, development, and fate of toxic PAHs in the environment. In the present review, the properties and role of biochar in the removal of PAHs were illustrated, and the influencing factors and an efficient key mechanism of biochar for the remediation of PAHs were discussed in detail. Various surface modification methods can be utilized to improve the biochar properties with the magnetization process; the advancements of modified biochar are pointed out in this review. Finally, the constraints and prospects for the large-scale application of biochar in the remediation of toxic pollutants are highlighted.

In-situ targeted removal of naphthalene from groundwater by peroxymonosulfate activation using molecularly imprinted activated carbon: Efficacy, mechanism and applicability

Efficient removal of low-concentration refractory polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) pollutants is crucial for ensuring groundwater safety. In this study, surface molecularly imprinted catalyst (MIP@AC) was developed based on activated carbon (AC) and molecular imprinting technology, and then MIP@AC was introduced into the simulated permeable reaction barrier to evaluate the performance of MIP@AC activated peroxymonosulfate (PMS) in in-situ targeted remediation of naphthalene (NAP) contaminated groundwater. The results showed that the relative adsorption selectivity coefficient and relative degradation selectivity coefficient of the MIP@AC material relative to the non-imprinted material AC was as high as 31.47 and 10.88, respectively; that is, MIP@AC can better resist the interference of competitive pollutants and achieve efficient targeted removal of NAP. Additionally, the reactive oxygen species (ROS) yield was higher in the MIP@AC/PMS system compared to the AC/PMS system. The target pollutant NAP was precisely enriched in the imprinted cavity of the MIP@AC, realizing that ROS production and pollutant degradation occurred simultaneously in the MIP@AC imprinted cavity. Therefore, the spatial confinement effect of the imprinted cavity shortened the mass transfer distance between the ROS and NAP, thereby reducing the loss of ROS due to self-quenching. Besides, Cl- significantly promoted the targeted removal of NAP, while HCO3- had a slight inhibitory effect; humic acid had no effect because of its larger molecular structure, which does not fit into the small imprinted cavities preferred by NAP. Importantly, the MIP@AC/PMS system demonstrated effective anti-complex matrix interference ability and targeted removal performance for NAP under natural groundwater conditions. This study can promote further research on the surface molecularly imprinted catalyst/PMS system as a new strategy for in-situ targeted remediation technology of contaminated groundwater.

Occurrence, removal, and risk assessment of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons and their derivatives in typical wastewater treatment plants

Wastewater treatment plants (WWTPs) have a certain removal capacity for polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) and their derivatives, but some of them are discharged with effluent into the environment, which can affect the environment. Therefore, to understand the presence, sources, and potential risks of PAHs and their derivatives in WWTPs. Sixteen PAHs, three chlorinated polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (ClPAHs), three oxidized polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (OPAHs), and three methylated polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (MPAHs) were detected in the influent and effluent water of three WWTPs in China. The average concentrations of their influent ∑PAHs, ∑ClPAHs, ∑OPAHs, and ∑MPAHs ranged from 2682.50 to 2774.53 ng/L, 553.26–906.28 ng/L, 415.40–731.56 ng/L, and 534.04–969.83 ng/L, respectively, and the effluent concentrations ranged from 823.28 to 993.37 ng/L, 269.43–489.94 ng/L, 285.93–463.55 ng/L, and 376.25–512.34 ng/L, respectively. The growth of heat transport and industrial energy consumption in the region has a significant impact on the level of PAHs in WWTPs. According to the calculated removal efficiencies of PAHs and their derivatives in the three WWTPs (A, B, and C), the removal rates of PAHs and their derivatives were 69–72%, 62–71%, and 68–73%, respectively, and for the substituted polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (SPAHs), the removal rates were 41–49%, 31–40%, and 33–39%, respectively; moreover, the removal rates of PAHs were greater than those of SPAHs in the WWTPs. The results obtained via the ratio method indicated that the main sources of PAHs in the influent of WWTPs were the combustion of coal and biomass, and petroleum contamination was the secondary source. In risk evaluation, there were 5 compounds for which the risk quotient was considered high ecological risk. During chronic disease evaluation, there were 11 compounds with a risk quotient considered to indicate high risk. PAHs and SPAHs with high relative molecular masses in the effluent of WWTPs pose more serious environmental hazards than their PAHs counterparts.

Simultaneous removal of phenanthrene and Pb using novel PPG-CNTs-nZVI beads.

PPG-CNTs-nZVI bead was synthesized by polyvinyl alcohol, pumice, carbon nanotube, and guar gum-nanoscale zero-valent iron to be applied on simultaneously removal of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs; phenanthrene) and heavy metals (Pb2+) via adsorption. The individual and simultaneous removal efficiency of phenanthrene and Pb2+ using the PPG-CNTs-nZVI beads was evaluated with a range of initial concentrations of these two pollutants. The kinetics and isotherms of phenanthrene and Pb2+ adsorption by the PPG-CNTs-nZVI beads were also determined. The PPG-CNTs-nZVI beads show reasonably high phenanthrene adsorption capacities (up to 0.16 mg/g), and they absorbed 85% of the phenanthrene (initial concentration 0.5 mg/L) in 30 min. High Pb2+ adsorption capabilities were also demonstrated by the PPG-CNTs-nZVI beads (up to 11.6 mg/g). The adsorption fits the Langmuir model better than the Freundlich model. The adsorption still remained stable with various ionic strength circumstances and a wide pH range (2-5). Additionally, the co-adsorption of phenanthrene and Pb2+ by the PPG-CNTs-nZVI beads resulted in synergistic effects. Particularly, phenanthrene-Pb2+ complex formation via π-cation interactions demonstrated a greater affinity than phenanthrene or Pb2+ alone. The present findings suggest that PPG-CNTs-nZVI beads may be effective sorbents for the simultaneous removal of PAHs and heavy metals from contaminated waters.

Removal of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) from produced water using the microalgae Chlorella vulgaris cultivated in mixotrophic and heterotrophic conditions

Chlorella vulgaris was cultivated for 15 days in 10 different treatments under mixotrophic and heterotrophic conditions, using wastewater from oil and poultry industries as the culture medium. The blends were made with produced water (PW), sterilized produced water (PWs), sterilized poultry wastewater (PoWs), sterilized seawater (SWs), and the addition of sodium nitrate to evaluate cell growth in treatments and the removal of PAHs. The heterotrophic condition showed more effective removal, having an initial concentration of 3.93 μg L−1 and a final concentration of 0.57 μg L−1 of total PAHs reporting 83%, during phycoremediation of (PW) than the mixotrophic condition, with an initial concentration of 3.93 μg L−1 and a final concentration of 1.96 and 43% removal for the PAHs. In the heterotrophic condition, the blend with (PWs + SWs) with an initial concentration of 0.90 μg L−1 and a final concentration of 0.32 μg L−1 had 64% removal of total PAHs compared to the mixotrophic condition with 37% removal having an initial concentration of 0.90 μg L−1 and a final concentration of 0.56 μg L−1. However, the best result in the mixotrophic condition was obtained using a blend of (PWs + PoWs) that had an initial cell concentration of 1.18 × 105 cells mL−1 and reached a final cell concentration of 4.39 × 105 cells mL−1, an initial concentration of 4.76 μg L−1 and a final concentration of 0.37 μg L−1 having a 92% total removal of PAHs. The biostimulation process increased the percentage of PAHs removal by 45% (PW) in the mixotrophic condition. This study showed that it is possible to allow an environmental remediation strategy that significantly reduces effluent toxicity and generates high value-added biomass in contaminated effluents rich in nutrients and carbon, based on a circular bioeconomy model.

Potassium peroxoborate: A sustained-released reactive oxygen carrier with enhanced PAHs contaminated soil remediation performance

Seeking for a safe, efficient, inexpensive, and eco-friendly oxidizer is always a big challenge for in-situ chemical oxidation (ISCO) technology. This study adopted the potassium peroxoborate (PPB), a novel peroxide, for soil remediation for the first time. PPB based chemical oxidation system (PPB-CO) could efficiently degrade polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) without other reagents added, reaching 72.1 %, 64.2 %, and 50.0 % removal rates for naphthalene, phenanthrene, and pyrene after 24 h reaction, respectively. The superior total PAHs removal efficiency (60.6 %) was 3.6–4.7 times higher than that of other commercial peroxides (2Na2CO3•3H2O, CaO2, and H2O2). Mechanism analysis revealed that varieties of reactive oxygen species (ROS) can be generated by PPB through Fenton-like or non-Fenton routines, including H2O2, perborates species, O2•−, •OH, and 1O2. The sustainable generation of H2O2 reduced the disproportionation effect of H2O2 by 86 %, significantly improving the utilization rate. Moreover, sandbox experiments and actual contaminated soil remediation experiments verified the feasibility of PPB-CO in a real polluted site. This work provides a novel strategy for effectively soil remediation, highlighting the selection and application of new oxidants.

Green mechanochemical activation of solid persulfate to remove PAHs in soil: Performance and Mechanism

Due to the high biotoxicity and persistence of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs), the remediation of PAHs-contaminated soil becomes an intractable problem. Persulfate-based advanced oxidation processes are widely used to degrade PAHs in aquatic environment. However, they are not convenient for used in soil due to the heterogeneity and complexity of soil matrix. In this study, a green and convenient ball milling process is introduced to activate persulfate for the remediation of PAHs-contaminated soil. About 82.5% PAHs were removed with 10% wt. Na2S2O8 (PS) addition and ball-milling for 2h under 500r/min. The degradation of PAHs is attributed to the attack of radicals (SO4·- and ·OH) generated from the activation of PS by mechanochemistry. Moreover, stable Si-O bonds were disrupted during ball-milling process, and formed free electron on the surface of soil particles. This facilitates the electron transfer from oxidants to contaminants. The particle size, surface element composition, functional group, and thermogravimetric analysis confirmed the slight disturbance of ball-milling-assisted PS process on the physical and chemical properties of soil. Therefore, ball-milling assisted PS approach would be a promising technology for the remediation of PAHs-contaminated soil. Environmental ImplicationThe industrial pollution plots pose environmental hazards and inhibit the development and utilization of the land. Ball-milling assisted persulfate technology could break the obstacle of activation of persulfate and overcome the disadvantage of mass transfer rate in solid phase, and thus improve the reactivity between oxidants and pollutants. In this study, we comprehensively investigated the process of ball-milling assisted PS technology on the removal of PAHs in soil and disclosed the mechanism in the view of mass transfer and redox reaction, which may throw a light on the way of non-combustion remediation technology of polluted soil.

PAHs removal by soil washing with thiacalix[4]arene tetrasulfonate

Remediating soil contaminated with polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) presents a significant environmental challenge due to their toxic and carcinogenic properties. Traditional PAHs remediation methods—chemical, thermal, and bioremediation—along with conventional soil-washing agents like surfactants and cyclodextrins face challenges of cost, ecological harm, and inefficiency. Here we show an effective and environmentally friendly calixarene derivative for PAHs removal through soil washing. Thiacalix[4]arene tetrasulfonate (TCAS) has a unique molecular structure of a sulfonate group and a sulfur atom, which enhances its solubility and facilitates selective binding with PAHs. It forms host-guest complexes with PAHs through π-π stacking, OH-π interactions, hydrogen bonding, van der Waals forces, and electrostatic interactions. These interactions enable partial encapsulation of PAH molecules, aiding their desorption from the soil matrix. Our results show that a 0.7% solution of TCAS can extract approximately 50% of PAHs from contaminated soil while preserving soil nutrients and minimizing adverse environmental effects. This research unveils the pioneering application of TCAS in removing PAHs from contaminated soil, marking a transformative advancement in resource-efficient and sustainable soil remediation strategies.

PAH bioremediation with Rhodococcus rhodochrous ATCC 21198: Impact of cell immobilization and surfactant use on PAH treatment and post-remediation toxicity

Polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) are prevalent environmental contaminants that are harmful to ecological and human health. Bioremediation is a promising technique for remediating PAHs in the environment, however bioremediation often results in the accumulation of toxic PAH metabolites. The objectives of this research were to demonstrate the cometabolic treatment of a mixture of PAHs by a pure bacterial culture, Rhodococcus rhodochrous ATCC 21198, and investigate PAH metabolites and toxicity. Additionally, the surfactant Tween ® 80 and cell immobilization techniques were used to enhance bioremediation. Total PAH removal ranged from 70–95% for fluorene, 44–89% for phenanthrene, 86–97% for anthracene, and 6.5–78% for pyrene. Maximum removal was achieved with immobilized cells in the presence of Tween ® 80. Investigation of PAH metabolites produced by 21198 revealed a complex mixture of hydroxylated compounds, quinones, and ring-fission products. Toxicity appeared to increase after bioremediation, manifesting as mortality and developmental effects in embryonic zebrafish. 21198′s ability to rapidly transform PAHs of a variety of molecular structures and sizes suggests that 21198 can be a valuable microorganism for catalyzing PAH remediation. However, implementing further treatment processes to address toxic PAH metabolites should be pursued to help lower post-remediation toxicity in future studies.

A novel mycelial pellet applied to remove polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons: High adsorption performance & its mechanisms

Mycelial pellets formed by Penicillium thomii ZJJ were applied as efficient biosorbents for the removal of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs), which are a type of ubiquitous harmful hydrophobic pollutants. The live mycelial pellets were able to remove 93.48 % of pyrene at a concentration of 100 mg/L within 48 h, demonstrating a maximum adsorption capacity of 285.63 mg/g. Meanwhile, the heat-killed one also achieved a removal rate of 65.01 %. Among the six typical PAHs (pyrene, phenanthrene, fluorene, anthracene, fluoranthene, benzo[a]pyrene), the mycelial pellets preferentially adsorbed the high molecular weight PAHs, which also have higher toxicity, resulting in higher removal efficiency. The experimental results showed that the biosorption of mycelial pellets was mainly a spontaneous physical adsorption process that occurred as a monolayer on a homogeneous surface, with mass transfer being the key rate-limiting step. The main adsorption sites on the surface of mycelia were carboxyl and N-containing groups. Extracellular polymeric substances (EPS) produced by mycelial pellets could enhance adsorption, and its coupling with dead mycelia could achieve basically the same removal effect to that of living one. It can be concluded that biosorption by mycelial pellets occurred due to the influence of electrostatic and hydrophobic interactions, consisting of five steps. Furthermore, the potential applicability of mycelial pellets has been investigated considering diverse factors. The mycelia showed high environmental tolerance, which could effectively remove pyrene across a wide range of pH and salt concentration. And pellets diameters and humic acid concentration had a significant effect on microbial adsorption effect. Based on a cost-effectiveness analysis, mycelium pellets were found to be a low-cost adsorbent. The research outcomes facilitate a thorough comprehension of the adsorption process of pyrene by mycelial pellets and their relevant applications, proposing a cost-effective method without potential environmental issues (heat-killed mycelial pellets plus EPS) to removal PAHs.

Characteristics of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) removal by nanofiltration with and without coexisting organics

Polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) are contaminants of great concern owing to their persistence, toxicity, and bioaccumulation in aquatic environments. In this study, nanofiltration (NF) was used to investigate the removal of naphthalene (NAP) and phenanthrene (PHE) using three membranes of NF270, NF90, and DK. Subsequently, we examined the effects of coexisting organics on PAHs removal. Based on the results, DK was determined to be the optimal membrane for removing PAHs by comparing the membrane flux and pollutant rejection. The membrane flux reached 34.32 L/m2·h, and the NAP and PHE rejections were 92.21% and 97.85%, respectively, at transmembrane pressure (TMP) of 5 bar using DK. Coexisting organics decreased the membrane fluxes of NF270 and DK in the following order: protein > glucose > humic acid. The NAP and PHE rejections were obviously improved using NF270 in the following order: humic acid > protein > glucose. The PHE rejection was slightly improved using DK. A low concentration of organics could reduce the NAP rejection using DK; however, the NAP rejection could be restored at high concentrations of organics, except for humic acid. Coexisting organics could cause severe membrane fouling. The order of the effect of different coexisting organics on membrane fouling was protein > humic acid > glucose. The total investment and operating costs were about 1.47 and 0.187 million dollars, respectively, for treating PAHs solution using DK when the feed flow was 300 m3/d.

Enhanced washing of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons from contaminated soils by the empowered surfactant properties of de novo O-alkylated humic matter

Aqueous solutions of humic acid (HA) derivatized by a catalyzed O-alkylation reaction with methyl, pentyl, and benzyl groups at 40, 60, and 80% of total HA acidity were used to wash off polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) from two contaminated soils. The enhanced surfactant properties enabled the alkylated HA to remove phenanthrene, anthracene, fluoranthene, and pyrene from both soils more extensively than the original unmodified HA, the 60% benzylation generally showing the greatest soil washing efficiency. For both soils, all alkylated HA revealed greater PAH removals than Triton X-100 nonionic surfactant, while the benzylated and methylated HA nearly and fully matched pollutants release by the anionic SDS in the coarse- and fine-textured soils, respectively. A consecutive second washing with 60% benzylated HA removed additional PAHs, in respect to the first washing, from the coarser-textured soil, except for fluoranthene, while removal from the finer-textured soil incremented even more for all PAHs. These findings indicate that the enhanced hydrophobicity obtained by a simple and unexpensive chemical derivatization of a natural humic surfactant can be usefully exploited in the washing of polluted soils, without being toxic to the soil biota and by potentially promoting the subsequent bio-attenuation of organic pollutants.

Nanoscale zero-valent iron (NZVI) intercalated MXene (Ti3C2Tx) for removal of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons in wastewater

MXenes are promising candidates for the removal of pollutants from aqueous solutions. Their application, however, is restricted by the lack of surface-active sites. This study examined the effect of NZVI intercalated MXene on the removal of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons from wastewater. XPS spectra, FTIR analysis, SEM images, and N2 adsorption-desorption isotherms characterizations indicated that the functional groups on the MXene surface aided in the introduction and stabilization of NZVI into the inter-layer and surface of MXene. The adsorption parameters (pH, dosage and contact time) were optimized using response surface methodology (RSM) in design expert software. The optimum operating conditions for the removal of naphthalene, fluorene and phenanthrene using NZVI intercalated MXene (named N-MXene-3) were pH of 3, dosage of 101.5 mg/L and contact time of 40.5 min. The use of synthesized N-MXene-3 to extract naphthalene, fluorene, and phenanthrene from oil and gas industry wastewater samples validates the usefulness of the proposed method in testing actual wastewater samples. Over 80% of the three polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons in wastewater were removed by the adsorbent. N-MXene-3 was shown to be an effective, and promising material for wastewater treatment.

Rice husk and its derived biochar assist phytoremediation of heavy metals and PAHs co-contaminated soils but differently affect bacterial community

In order to evaluate the feasibility of rice husk and rice husk biochar on assisting phytoremediation of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) and heavy metals (HMs) co-contaminated soils, a 150-day pot experiment planted with alfalfa was designed. Rice husk and its derived biochar were applied to remediate a PAHs, Zn, and Cr co-contaminated soil. The effects of rice husk and biochar on the removal and bioavailability of PAHs and HMs, PAH-ring hydroxylating dioxygenase gene abundance and bacterial community structure in rhizosphere soils were investigated. Results suggested that rice husk biochar had better performance on the removal of PAHs and immobilization of HMs than those of rice husk in co-contaminated rhizosphere soil. The abundance of PAH-degraders, which increased with the culture time, was positively correlated with PAHs removal. Rice husk biochar decreased the richness and diversity of bacterial community, enhanced the growth of Steroidobacter, Bacillus, and Sphingomonas in rhizosphere soils. However, Steroidobacter, Dongia and Acidibacter were stimulated in rice husk amended soils. According to the correlation analysis, Steroidobacter and Mycobacterium may play an important role in PAHs removal and HMs absorption. The combination of rice husk biochar and alfalfa would be a promising method to remediate PAHs and HMs co-contaminated soil.

Biochars assisted phytoremediation of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons contaminated agricultural soil: Dynamic responses of functional genes and microbial community

A biochar-intensified phytoremediation experiment was designed to investigate the dynamic effects of different biochars on polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbon (PAH) removal in ryegrass rhizosphere contaminated soil. Maize and wheat straw biochar pyrolyzed at 300 °C and 500 °C were amended into PAH-contaminated soil, and then ryegrass (Lolium multiflorum L.) was planted for 90 days. Spearman's correlations among PAH removal, enzyme activity, abundance of PAH-ring hydroxylating dioxygenase (PAH-RHDα), and fungal and bacterial community structure were analyzed to elucidate the microbial degradation mechanisms during the combined remediation process. The results showed that 500 °C wheat straw biochar had higher surface area and more nutrients, and significantly accelerated the phytoremediation of PAHs (62.5 %), especially for high molecular weight PAH in contaminated soil. The activities of urease and dehydrogenase and the abundance of total and PAH-degrading bacteria, which improved with time by biochar and ryegrass, had a positive correlation with the removal rate of PAHs. Biochar enhanced the abundance of gram-negative (GN) PAH-RHDα genes. The GN PAH-degraders, Sphingomonas, bacteriap25, Haliangium, and Dongia may play vital roles in PAH degradation in biochar-amended rhizosphere soils. Principal coordinate analysis indicated that biochar led to significant differences in fungal community structures before 30 days, while the diversity of the bacterial community composition depended on planting ryegrass after 60 days. These findings imply that the structural reshaping of microbial communities results from incubation time and the selection of biochar and ryegrass in PAH-contaminated soils. Applying 500 °C wheat straw biochar could enhance the rhizoremediation of PAH-contaminated soil and benefit the soil microbial ecology.

Persistent polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons removal from sewage sludge-amended soil through phytoremediation combined with solid-state ligninolytic fungal cultures

Polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) are widely present in the environment, causing increasing concern because of their impact on soil health, food safety and potential health risks. Four bioremediation strategies were examined to assess the dissipation of PAHs in agricultural soil amended with sewage sludge over a period of 120 days: soil-sludge natural attenuation (SS); phytoremediation using maize (Zea mays L.) (PSS); mycoremediation (MR) separately using three white-rot fungi (Pleurotus ostreatus, Phanerochaete chrysosporium and Irpex lacteus); and plant-assisted mycoremediation (PMR) using a combination of maize and fungi. In the time frame of the experiment, mycoremediation using P. chrysosporium (MR-PH) exhibited a significantly higher (P < 0.05) degradation of total PAHs compared to the SS and PSS treatments, achieving a degradation rate of 52 %. Both the SS and PSS treatments demonstrated a lower degradation rate of total PAHs, with removal rates of 18 % and 32 %, respectively. The PMR treatments showed the highest removal rates of total PAHs at the end of the study, with degradation rates of 48–60 %. In the shoots of maize, only low- and medium-molecular-weight PAHs were found in both the PSS and PMR treatments. The calculated translocation and bioconversion factors always showed values < 1. The analysed enzymatic activities were higher in the PMR treatments compared to other treatments, which can be positively related to the higher degradation of PAHs in the soil.

Removal of PAHs in paddy fields: How natural periphytic biofilm enhances the removal process and the mechanisms involved

Previous studies on the removal of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) from farmland have mostly relied on anthropogenic biotic or abiotic amendments. Here, an indigenous paddy periphytic biofilm (PB) composed of complex symbolic communities was enriched, and its essential role, as well as the potential mechanisms of PAHs dissipation, was investigated. A pot experiment revealed that PB achieved 92.87% and 92.76% removal of the USEPA priority PAHs from the overlying water and soil of a heavily PAHs-contaminated paddy field, respectively. This subsequently decreased ΣPAHs accumulation in rice shoots to 4.12 ± 1.08 ng g-1, under the thresholds based on food safety standards. The physiology of PB in an aquatic culture with PAHs was assessed to understand the toxicity and removal mechanism. Extracellular polymeric substances (EPS) adsorption occurred in the early stage, followed by late biodegradation, which was considered the primary mechanism for removing PAHs. In this process, the PB contributed more to the high molecular weight PAHs compared to the low molecular weight. Furthermore, 16S-rRNA sequencing demonstrated specific functional phyla (Proteobacteria, Ascomycota, and Chloroplastida) with significantly higher relative abundances in periphytic communities with PAHs, which facilitated PAHs degradation. The predicted synergetic metabolic pathway involved 33 PAHs-degrading genes as inferred by PICRUSt. These findings suggest that PB could provide a promising strategy for target PAHs remediation in situ and food safety in contaminated paddy fields.

Environmental fate and health risks of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons in the Yangtze River Delta Urban Agglomeration during the 21st century

Understanding the spatiotemporal distribution and behavior of Polycyclic Aromatic Hydrocarbons (PAHs) in the context of climate change and human activities is essential for effective environmental management and public health protection. This study utilized an integrated simulation system that combines land-use, hydrological, and multimedia fugacity models to predict the concentrations, transportation, and degradation of 16 priority-controlled PAHs across six environmental compartments (air, water, soil, sediment, vegetation, and impermeable surfaces) within one of the world's prominent urban agglomerations, the Yangtze River Delta Urban Agglomeration (YRDUA), under future Shared Socio-economic Pathways (SSP)-Representative Concentration Pathways (RCP) scenarios. Incremental lifetime carcinogenic risk for adults and children exposed to PAHs were also evaluated. The results show a declining trend in PAHs concentrations and associated health risks during the 21st century. Land use types, hydrological characteristics, population, and GDP, have significant correlations with the fate of PAHs. The primary removal for PAHs is determined to be driven by advection through air and water. PAHs covering on impermeable surfaces pose a relatively higher health risk compared to those in other environmental media. This study offers valuable insights into PAHs pollution in the YRDUA, aiming to ensure public health safety, with the potential for application in other urban areas.
